Rian Urding

Rian Urding was appointed as Chief Executive Officer for Emerald Automotive North America in January 2016. Rian will oversee all the company’s strategic growth and expansion in the United States.

In March 2012 Rian Urding, an ICAEW chartered accountant, was appointed Chief Financial Officer of Emerald Automotive, a vehicle manufacturing company which has designed and developed an all new, lightweight, low to zero emissions, series-hybrid electric commercial vehicle for the global fleet market. In February 2014 Rian was instrumental in selling the entire business to Chinese auto-maker Geely, owners of the Volvo Car Corporation, the London Taxi Company and Lotus Cars.

In September 2007 Rian was appointed Chief Financial Officer of Intelligent Energy Holdings plc, a clean power-systems company specialising in fuel cell technology research based at Loughborough University and Long Beach, California. During his tenure at Intelligent Energy Rian successfully guided the company through to profitability, having implemented a challenging 5-year business plan and raised a significant amount of private equity funding.

Previously Rian had been Group Financial Controller for ClarityBlue Limited, a subsidiary of Experian plc. During his time at ClarityBlue, a company specialising in Marketing and Database Software Technology, Rian was responsible for all financial management of the UK and US businesses during a period when revenues grew from £12m to £84m. In addition to the establishment and control of a US subsidiary, Rian was instrumental in the trade sale of the entire ClarityBlue business to Experian, which yielded generous returns for ClarityBlue’ shareholders.

Prior to ClarityBlue, Rian spent some years at Vega plc (an AIM listed company) as Financial Controller for the Space Division, which provided software simulation support to the European Space Agency.

Rian trained with Price Waterhouse Coopers and following qualification as a ICAEW Chartered Accountant in 1999 has spent most of his career in high growth, Intellectual Property driven, deeply technical businesses.

Earlier in his career, Rian was commissioned into the Royal Air Force which he then left to study accountancy at the University of East Anglia. During his time at university Rian joined the British Army, gaining a commission from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He stayed with the British Army until 2003, when he retired as a Captain. Rian is married with three children and enjoys outdoor activities whenever time and weather permit.
